Thirty-five years after the original music video was released, Rick Astley is bringing back Never Gonna Give You Up in a big way.

The 80s icon has starred in a shot-for-shot remake of the unforgettable video, which features all the same moves, nostalgic fashion choices and unmistakable locations.

The one-minute clip is actually an advert for the CSAA Insurance Group, or the California State Automobile Association, and shows Rick pulling the exact same dance moves and singing the track as if no time has passed at all since 1987.

The music video’s 2022 face-lift also includes the same outfits, including the double denim look, the classic black blazer, and brown rain coat that helped make the original so unforgettable.

At the end of the ad, Rick is seen watching the music video on his phone before asking “is this still a thing?” referring to the rick-rolling internet meme. He then turns to the two Rick clones from the music video, who both give him a nonchalant shrug.

It’s not the first time that Rick has paid homage to his career-defining moment this year. In May, he treated fans to an animated version of the signature video to celebrate 35 years since its release.

His 1987 single went straight to number one in the UK and worldwide, and was at the top of the charts for five weeks, becoming the best selling-track of that year.

The video is just as iconic, and currently stands at 1.2 billion views on YouTube.

In a separate clip shared to social media, Rick said: “It’s really funny, it makes me giggle every time I see it. It’s technically brilliant, just fantastic, frame for frame, it’s incredible.”

The animation is literally a complete remake of the unforgettable video, featuring Rick in all his red-headed glory dancing alongside two blonde women while belting out his famous tune.
