These fright-filled titles depart from the usual horror settings to take players into whole new worlds of scares.

The atmosphere of a horror game directly defines how effective it will be in immersing and scaring those playing it. Different horror games manage to breathe new life into the most niche of settings, such as haunted mansions, asylums, hospitals, forests, cities, etc. That said, this same variety of settings can get a bit old for players who are apt to try out a bunch of horror games.

Although these locations are often used based on their fear factor (because let's face it, haunted asylums and dark, empty forests are chilling), there's something even more unsettling about being dropped in a horror game where the setting is completely different from the usual creepy mansion or bloody hospital. These games took unique settings and delivered perfectly crafted scares.

Although the bulk of Among The Sleep takes place in a fantasy-riddled house, the story aspect of playing through the eyes of a child makes it so the same house the players are physically trapped inside of feels like a playground of a million worlds.

Among The Sleep is a beautiful game that takes players through a variety of eerie, yet stunning, levels. These include traveling through paintings, gingerbread houses, dark forests, and more.

Little Nightmares is hauntingly known for the grotesque, bloated characters, the Twin Chefs. That said, the segment exploring the kitchen is only one part of the game, and the setting strays far from that of a basic kitchen.

The game follows Six, a nine-year-old hungry little girl clad in a yellow raincoat, as she traverses through and attempts to escape the Maw. The Maw is a large, iron, underwater vessel (likely a submarine of sorts) that's packed to the brim with monstrous characters. Little Nightmares is a platformer that's primarily a stealth and puzzle-solving game, which builds its atmosphere through brilliant sound design and unique graphics.

Betrayer is unique in many aspects, including its monotone color scheme and setting. The game is set in colonial Virginia in the 17th century, giving those who have wanted a horror experience set in the olden days exactly what they bargained for.

The game primarily focuses on stealth elements, as the protagonist primarily sneaks up behind enemies, timing his movements with gusts of strong wind. There is a variety of colonial weaponry that can be used to slay enemies, such as tomahawks, muskets, pistols, crossbows, and more.

Amnesia: Rebirth is the highly anticipated sequel to Amnesia: The Dark Descent, which came out in 2010. While Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs take place in mansions and factories, Amnesia: Rebirth has players wandering through desert tunnels and catacombs.

Much like the previous two games, Amnesia: Rebirth is a first-person psychological horror game. Players will see through the eyes of Anastasie "Tasi" Trianon as she searches for her companions in the dark, leering tunnels.

Rule Of Rose was causing controversy even before its release in 2006. It had critics and authorities alike demanding the banning of the game due to its "brutal nature and underage eroticism," which are notably not present in the game whatsoever but instead overreactions. The game is a psychological horror experience based on the concept of childhood.

The game takes place in a world where young girls have established a hierarchy dubbed the Red Crayon Aristocrats. This is already an interesting world setting, but within that world are a number of interesting levels the player gets to interact with, one of the most notable being an aircraft.

Although Bendy & The Ink Machine has become quite a mainstream horror game over the years, it's impossible to ignore the creativity in the setting of the game as a whole. The game is set in the fictional vintage animation studio, Joey Drew Studios.

The vintage animation studio setting gives those who were unnerved by the cartoonish, creepy style of old animation an inescapable sense of dread. The player spends most of the game's chapters navigating and attempting to escape Joey Drew Studios, encountering monstrous, grotesque characters along the way and unraveling the story of the now-abandoned animation studio.

School is already a dreadful place for most children and teenagers, but Corpse Party ramps up the normal amount of dread and fear one would feel in high, middle, and elementary school by ten-fold. Corpse Party follows eight students and their teacher as they perfect a phony friendship ritual that transports them to the haunting Heavenly Host Elementary.

There, the students and their teacher must solve the gruesome murder mystery of Heavenly Host. In doing so, they seek to find a way to transport them all back to the real world or die trying.

Iron Lung has being dubbed by some players as one of the scariest games to be released in 2022. For those with claustrophobia or phobias pertaining to the unknown monstrous creatures that swim under the ocean, Iron Lung will be a horrifying experience.

What's more terrifying than an office job in corporate America? The answer is not being alone when the office appeared to be empty. One Late Night capitalizes on this fear by placing the player in a familiar setting, one of an office building.

The player assumes the role of a protagonist working late at night after other employees have gone home, only to realize that something, or someone, is in the office with him, leaving small, eerie signs of life as a warning of their presence.

Nothing is more terrifying that the capabilities and thoughts of the human mind, especially one that's been through trauma. American McGee's Alice puts players into a sinister, violent, and gloomy version of the Wonderland that Alice explored in the famous tales Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass.

The game was criticized for its linear storyline, but commended for its art style and atmospheric qualities. Players who are looking for an interesting, dark psychological take on the original story and characters of Alice in Wonderland should definitely check out American McGee's Alice.
