Mother Nature did her best to cancel all events Mother’s Day weekend 2022, but a few dozen people braved the strong winds, bands of rain and blowing sand to participate in the Boogie Down the Boardwalk to Beat Blood Cancer.

The event was organized by Ann Cameron, who is raising money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in honor of Bob Hughes. The son of former Rehoboth Beach Mayor John Hughes, Bob has grown up in Rehoboth Beach and has run with the Grove Park Running Club for years. Bob has multiple myeloma, which has no cure at this time.

Asked why the event wasn’t postponed like everything else, Cameron, in a text, responded, “Cancer doesn’t take a day off.”

When they weren’t covering their faces to protect themselves from the sand, participants tried to “play” inflatable saxophones. Many of the women were wearing red tutus.

At the after party in the newly opened CoWork Reho on the first floor of the Henlopen Hotel, Cameron said they had raised $65,000 of a $100,000 goal. The announcement garnered a round of applause from the still-wet crowd.
