Cinema inspires the way viewers see and think, but movies can also inspire the way viewers dress. There are certain movies that have done just that!

Cinema has a history of inspiring change, whether that be social issues, popular culture, or even fashion. From brightly coloured signature jackets to suits made to fit, it is safe to say the world of cinema has definitely impacted the world of fashion. The onscreen characters that viewers fall in love with or, in some cases, love to hate, have provided fans with an array of interesting outfits that vary from alternative to suave.

Reddit user dinof526 recognised how these iconic ensembles have impacted fans and sought the help of other Redditors to find movies that have inspired viewers' sense of style.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a thriller mystery that captivated viewers in more ways than one, especially through its use of fashion. The movie created a main character that adopted a more punk rock look compared to the prim and proper female leads viewers so commonly see in thrillers.

Reddit user TheBizness shared, "I get some amount of inspiration from every movie/show I watch these days, but in particular Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was really great." Lisbeth singlehanded taught every viewer that they don't need to follow the popular trends to look good; her dress sense saw a rise in short fringes, piercings, and leather jackets, with many explaining that Lisbeth's style inspired them to dress and feel tough.

Despite being a visually stunning and unique adventure flick, The Darjeeling Limited is one of Wes Anderson's most underrated movies. Wes Anderson employed vibrant coloring to create a beautiful movie that was somewhat overshadowed by each character's sense of style. Each brother was dressed to perfection, often seen in well-tailored suave suits even when they themselves may have looked a bit disheveled.

These well-dressed suits were paired alongside signature sunglasses and highly decorative suitcases that were hand-crafted carriers of uniqueness. Reddit user VealHatTrickFerris advocated that "the suits, the luggage, the accessories... They were all beautiful." Even the brothers' nightwear and matching eye masks explored that of high fashion, resulting in some fans seeking high-quality pyjama sets.

The Matrix continues to be an iconic movie even now, with many long-term fans continuing to watch it today. It didn't just provide fans with an action-packed and complex storyline but also fashion inspiration that would increase in popularity throughout the years.

The Matrix sunglasses were just the start as many fans started to enjoy an all-black outfit often accompanied by a full-length trench coat and endless amounts of leather. Reddit user the3r1c was quick to state, "The Matrix obviously," with several fans replacing the name 'full-length trench' with the title 'The Matrix coat,' proving just how iconic the movie was in terms of fashion alone.

This Is England contains some of the best performances to date, especially from British legend Stephen Graham, but for many Brits, this movie summed up British culture perfectly even through its onscreen fashion. From cuffed jeans to Doc Martens, This Is England pinpointed some iconic British fashion staples and reignited people's love for them, including the somewhat controversial double denim.

The movie saw a resurgence of bomber jackets alongside Fred Perry polo shirts, encouraging many retailers to cater to this new trend, with cuffed jeans now being ready to purchase rather than a do-it-yourself job. Reddit user Coyle was one fan that shared that the "style is awesome."

Patrick Bateman is easily one of the most fashionable fictional characters to date, with Metal_Lyrics stating that "Patrick's style was flawless." His suits are tailored to perfection, with each one having a unique charm. Whilst each suit is beautifully made, Patrick seems to be the only person who can pull off pattern-clashing, with his tie, shirt, and suit showcasing an array of patterns.

However, it wasn't just his suits that won the hearts of fashion lovers but also, in a twisted way, his iconic full-length clear raincoat. The raincoat is now a fashion staple, with many festival-goers now searching for a clear rain jacket that will simultaneously keep them dry whilst still showcasing their intricate outfit.

Ocean's Eleven is a forgotten blockbuster of the 2000s, but one thing fans haven't forgotten is the impact the movie had and continues to have on the fashion scene. Each character had their own unique sense of style, all loosely based around smart attire, which made each look interesting.

The movie encouraged viewers to experiment with their existing smart wear by showcasing several different looks through one base layer. From buttoned-up regal suits to a toned-down edgier look, Ocean's Eleven gave smart attire a way to be fashionable again rather than mundane. HailToTheVictors expressed how they enjoyed that "each character had such a distinct style, and it was such a funky cool look," which has since been mirrored offscreen.

Moonrise Kingdom is just another one of Wes Anderson's playful, colorful, and endearing flicks that won the hearts of viewers whilst simultaneously convincing others to purchase a bright red coat. Reddit user yoyo_shi was just one fan who was completely enamored with each character's dress sense, stating that they "especially liked the narrator's getup and the khaki scouts' uniforms."

The playful element Wes Anderson emanates throughout his movies was brought to life through the characters' outfits, including the famous red coat that made many users feel nostalgia for their childhood. The famous red coat paired with the bobble hat encouraged many to seek out a coat that would give them the same comfort as the warm outfit.

There are many lessons that 500 Days of Summer taught its viewers as an unconventional romance movie, but it also taught many fans how to dress better. A Reddit user explained, "...no movie had a bigger effect on how I dress than that one," with both of the main characters epitomizing the transition from youth to professional adulthood through their clothes.

From sweater vests to pretty blouses, both Tom and Summer mirrored the professional style of dress that was worn by many young professionals, as seen through iconic TV couples like Pam and Jim. The movie taught many younger viewers how to dress like an adult whilst simultaneously keeping hold of their youth, resulting in many fans purchasing their own wardrobe inspired by that of Tom and Summer.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt was something of a fashion icon in the 2000s, with his role as Tom turning heads for his wardrobe of sweater vests, but it was his role as Arthur that earned him an A grade in high-end fashion. Within the movie, his character was always seen with his hair slicked back and was always in a well-tailored suit.

His slim three-piece suit sparked a new trend within the world of professional tailoring, with fans like dinof526 explaining, "His character in that movie inspired the new slim three piece suit." This new slim look moved away from the oversized suit jackets that hung off men's shoulders and broke down the shirt and tie combination by adding an extra layer that also avoided the dreaded popped button, resulting in its rise in popularity.

Crazy, Stupid, Love. didn't just provide viewers with a hilarious romance but also some pretty sound fashion advice from the style icon: Ryan Gosling. Within the movie, Ryan plays a man called Jacob, whose style gives off a wealthy vibe whilst also suggesting that Jacob is a man who is well-groomed and takes pride in his appearance, making him all the more attractive.

Reddit user zzzpoohzzz explained how the movie is a good flick that "even goes into some detail about style. 'Be better than the Gap.'" This piece of fashion advice encouraged viewers to replace their slogan tee with a well-fitted suit and to embrace the idea that looking good sometimes equals feeling good.
